Maruti Suzuki Swift.

Maruti Suzuki Swift.

Maruti Suzuki Swift has ruled the hearts of several Indians ever since its launch in 2005. But the origins of this car go way back to the year 1999, when Suzuki's sports bike Hayabus 1300R was launched, from which Swift, the car, is inspired. The fact that they had created the world's fastest production motorcycle encouraged the Japanese auto giant's engineer to take their success a step further. The power of the Hayabusa 1300R was then given the form of Suzuki GSX-R/4, which further evolved through the means of Suzuki's concept cars called Concept S and Concept S-2. Finally it was the concept S-2 that took the form of Maruti Suzuki Swift in 2005. It took a team of 21 Indian designers and engineers, who meticulously studied the car and transformed it into a ground breaking hatchback. This radically designed car wooed India with its performance, hence changing the history of Indian automotive industry, as we know it. But their endeavours did not end just their. In 2007, Maruti Suzuki launched a diesel version of the car that redefined the standards prevalent in the industry.

And the reason behind this hatchback's massive success is no exaggeration, and is in fact, well justified. The primary reason being the technology that fuels this powerful hatchback, i.e. 1.3-litre petrol engine and the 1.3-litre DDiS engine. The petrol variant's engine was replaced by a 1.2-litre L K-series engine in 2010 in compliance with the BS IV emission norms. The 16-valve light weight DOHC petrol engine not only reduces friction, and provides faster acceleration but also delivers a power of 85.81bhp. The low maintenance engine provides excellent fuel efficiency with a mileage of 18.6kmpl. On the other hand, the 5-step Multi Injection Common Rail System of the diesel engine delivers a staggering mileage of 22.9kmpl, making it one of the most fuel-efficient cars to tread on Indian roads. Also, its turbochargers and intercooler combination results in not only efficient combustion, but also higher torque and clearer emissions. All that technology is further complemented by the provision of the new generation RBSS and improved transmission that renders it the best car in the segment. And Maruti Suzuki takes technology a step further with the safety facilities in the car. Dual SRS airbags, Boot Assist System braking, ABS and increased torsional rigidity are just a handful from a long list of safety-enhancing features found in the Maruti Suzuki Swift.

Moving on to the design and looks, there is no second opinion about the fact that Maruti Suzuki Swift is indeed one of the best looking cars that India has ever seen. The car has been designed in such an extravagant manner, that it takes your breath away in a matter of moments. Aerodynamic lines, enhanced dimensions and an athletic stance make up for the bold, and yet stylish contour of the car. The sweptback headlights and the stylish vertical tail lamps, together with other stylish features of Swift's exteriors take the charm of the contemporary looks of this hatchback to a different level altogether. And the interiors aren't any less enticing. The 3-spoke steering wheel, the instrument cluster along with other defining interior features add to the overall aura of the car. This car is truly nothing like anything.

Maruti Swift Petrol Models
Maruti Swift LXI    The new Maruti Suzuki Swift LXI is the base petrol model of Swift range which comprise of a total of 6 models. Maruti Suzuki Swift LXI is the most likable car in its segment and caters to mass audience. Though Alto is priced much less than New Maruti Suzuki Swift LXI, the list of features in the latter make it stands out from the rest. Swift has been a highly popular hatchback in Indian market and the craze for this small wonder is never-ending. Talking about the LXI, Maruti Suzuki has not bartered with the features of the car and generously loaded the new Swift LXI with body color bumpers and tubeless tyres. The glass used in windshield and windows are tinted, not in black, but in green shade. The outside rear view mirrors (ORVMs) are adjusted manually in LXI model. Other exterior features are 2 intermittent wipers in front, steel wheels with centre cap, remote fuel lid and back-door opener. The kerb weight of this variant is 960 kg and thus is the lightest among all. Even the tyre size is small being 165/80R14. New Maruti Suzuki Swift LXI is powered by K-series petrol engine with VVT. The engine displaces 1197 cc and consists of 4 cylinders with 10:1 compression ratio. The mighty engine is well capable of generating 86bhp of power at 6000 rpm and 114Nm torque is churned out of engine at 4000 rpm. The engine coupled to 5 speed transmission, easily meets the BSIV emission norms. The variant has a fuel capacity of 4.2-litre.
Maruti Swift Star LXI
Maruti Swift Star VXI
Maruti Swift VXI   The all new Maruti Suzuki Swift VXI is a mid-segment petrol model. It is powered by the same K-series 1197cc engine producing 86bhp of maximum power. Unlike the LXI model, New Maruti Swift VXI has body color door handles in addition to body color bumpers, electrically powered ORVMs with turn indicators, front and rear fog lamps for enhanced visibility during unfavorable weather conditions, black out film on A and B pillars and 165/80 R14 steel wheel cap. Swift VXI looks like a high-end hatchback with plush and chic interiors. The sporty wrap around the door trims with silver accents on them renders a menacing look to the car. The day and night IRVM and passenger side sun visor protects from the radiations in this variant of Maruti Swift. The silver accents on 3-spoke steering wheel have been added in this variant. The inside door handles have chrome polishing on them which render posh appearance to the inmates. The instrument cluster includes Tachometer along with standard equipments like seat belt, key-off, and door close and light-off reminder for driver, low fuel warning, multi information display etc.
Maruti Swift ZXI    Maruti Suzuki Swift ZXI is the top-end petrol variant with same engine specs as Swift LXI and VXI. So it will not account for any deficiency in Swift, rather will take complete care of the driverâ??s and passengerâ??s needs. Although this is 5-seater hatchback, the features inside the car makes it look like a mini sedan. The variant is loaded with comfort factors like power and tilt steering, power windows with auto down function on driver side window, driver seat adjuster, automatic climate control, lane change indicator, high-end stereo with radio and CD Player, intelligent speed based auto volume, Aux-in and USB socket, 2 front and 2 rear speakers, 2 integrated front tweeters, steering wheel mounted audio controls with illumination. Maruti Swift Diesel Models
Maruti Swift LDI   Maruti Suzuki Swift LDI is the base diesel model in the entire Swift range. It is churned by a DDiS diesel engine with 1248cc displacement. It delivers the maximum power of 74bhp at 4000 rpm and maximum torque of 190Nm at 2000 rpm. The diesel distribution is done through Common Rail Direct Injection and the air charging system is brought into effect by a fixed geometry turbo charger with intercooler. The variant drives easily in cities with BSIV emission norms. Just like the petrol variants, the diesel variants are mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The point of difference is seen in kerb weight of diesel variants. The new Maruti Suzuki Swift LDI measures 1050 kg in kerb weight. The tyre in this variant is same as LXI i.e. 165/80R14. Apart from technical specifications, the features of the car are same as Maruti Suzuki Swift LXI. Body color door handles, electric powered ORVMs with side indicators, fog lamps, etc are missing on this variant which helps reduce cost of this variant.
Maruti Swift Star LDI
Maruti Swift Star VDI
Maruti Swift VDI   The new Maruti Suzuki Swift VDI BSIV is the diesel mid-segment variant powered by 1248cc diesel engine. It supports the BSIV emission norms and has a host of features. The features list in this variant matches completely with the new Maruti Suzuki Swift VXI in petrol guise. Apart from all the interior and exterior features, the safety options include rear door child locks, front and rear seat head restraint, a double horn for extra caution on road, front seat belts with 3 point ELR, rear seat belts with 3 point ELR in sides and middle lap belt, security alarm system, high-mounted stop lamp, side impact beams and iCats. But the VDI covers up the missing features with body color door handles, electric ORVMs with turn indicators, fog lamps, steel wheels with full wheel cap, and silver accents on power and tilt steering wheel, etc.
Maruti Swift ZDi   This is the top-end version but in diesel trim. New Maruti Suzuki Swift ZDi allows the driver to experience the pleasurable 22.9 kmpl mileage on highways. It is the priciest variant among all 6 and has been loaded with a variety of features. The features are highly upgraded and make the variant looks chic. All the models including ZDi are available in 7 peppy and subtle colors. The USP of this variant is that it is dressed with alloy wheels with centre cap, tells about outside temperature on instrument panel placed on dashboard, has electromagnetic back-door opening system, automatic climate control, class apart audio system with Aux-in and USB, airbags, ABD, EBD, brake assists etc. This diesel version of Swift is packed with 1.3-litre DDiS engine with a displacement of 1248cc. This engine is endowed with turbocharger and intercooler combination and 5 step multi injection common rail system that helps in better fuel combustion, fuel efficiency, higher torque etc. The engine is built of Aluminum bed plate which helps in reducing vibration and noises in high speed and offers smooth and hassle free driving experience.Compare Maruti Swift Diesel Models.

Maruti Swift Mileage

Editor's take : The fuel efficiency of the Swift petrol and diesel has always been good, and the same trend is carried forward in the new generation as well.

The all new Maruti Suzuki Swift is offered in both, petrol and diesel variants. The petrol version is packed with a 1.2-litre K series engine with a displacement of 1198cc. The engine is highly fuel efficient with the presence of VVT (variable Valve Timing) that allows the engine to breathe better, offer optimum performance, and also enhance fuel economy. Furthermore, the powertrain is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission gearbox. Maruti Suzuki Swift’s powerful engine is compliant with the BS IV emission standards and delivers an impressive mileage of 18.6kmpl as per ARAI test cycle . The new Swift is 4 per cent more fuel efficient than the outgoing model.

The diesel version of Maruti Suzuki Swift is powered by 1.3-litre DDiS engine with a displacement of 1248cc. It is equipped with a combination of a turbocharger and intercooler, which offers efficient combustion, while the DOHC (Double Overhead Camshaft) ensures proper valve opening that accumulatively make this engine very frugal. The advanced DDiS (Direct Diesel Injection System), which is a patented version of CRDi (Common Rail Direct Injection), also helps it achieve maximum fuel economy. The diesel engine offers a mileage of 22.9kmpl as per ARAI. But the new Swift diesel is 6 per cent more fuel efficient than the outgoing Swift.
Power of Maruti Swift

Editor's take : The power of the Swift has been good and now both the engines are tuned for better drivability. The power ratings aren’t hanged though.

New Maruti Suzuki Swift is available in two versions, i.e. petrol and diesel. The 1.2-litre, K-Series VVT petrol engine comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission gearbox, with synchromesh in all gears and one reverse. The engine has MPFI (Multi Point

Fuel Injection) fuel injection that helps the car to deliver optimum performance. This highly advanced engine produces an impressive power of 86bhp at 6000rpm and a torque of 114 Nm at 4000rpm , which is more than the older version of Swift. The diesel version of Maruti Swift houses a 1.3-litre DDiS engine. The DDiS engine is equipped with 5-step Multi Injection CRDi system with turbocharger and intercooler combination that offers efficient combustion and higher torque. The DOHC packed engine is built of aluminum bed plate that produces less noise and vibration even at high speed. This advanced DDiS engine produces a power of 74bhp at 4000rpm and a torque of 190Nm at 2000rpm .

Engines:

i10 iRDE 1.1
The i10 was launched with a 1.1 litre (called iRDE engine) 65 bhp (48 kW; 66 PS) I4 engine - the same motor used in the Kia Picanto/Hyundai Atos Prime/Santro Xing. However, it produces less CO2 emissions than the Picanto

i10 Kappa 1.2

The i10 also comes with a 1.2 litre petrol Euro-5 compliant engine (called the Kappa engine), with the same CO2 emissions as the 1.1L version. The spark plug of the 1.2L is non-standard.

i10 Diesel
A 1.1 litre 3-cylinder diesel CRDi variant is available in Europe but has not yet been introduced into the UK and Indian market.

i10 Electric
Main article: Hyundai BlueOn

Hyundai recently launched i10 Electric in Delhi Auto Expo and is expected to be available in India by 2011.[1] The i10-based electric car is called BlueOn

10 Kappa-2 1.2
In 2010 Hyundai launched a facelifted version of the i10 in India which uses a Kappa 2 engine with VTVT Technology to further improve performance of this engine. Hyundai engineers have taken the existing 1.2-litre 4-cylinder Kappa engine and added VTVT (Variable Timing and Valve Train). The i10 is the first small car in the country to receive variable valve timing making it, on paper at least, the most sophisticated 1.2-litre engine in its segment (the Honda Jazz also has an i-VTEC head but is a segment higher). This system, working on the intake side, helps in altering the valve timing and lift according to the situation and thus improves low-end responses and fuel efficiency. VTVT hasn’t increased the horsepower and it is still rated at 80 PS (59 kW; 79 hp). However the engine is reported to feel more refined and show very little vibration at higher revs
